Raphaelle Delaunay

Modern Swing
France

As a graduate of the Royal School of Dance in London, Raphaëlle Delaunay became part of the Paris Opera’s “Corps de Ballet” at the early age of 15. In 1997, Pina Bausch recruited her for the Tanztheater Wuppertal. Three years later, she joined the Nederlands Dans Theater, where she developed her first choreographies. Since 2006, she works as a regular dancer and choreographer, a.o. with the Compagnie Traces (Jefferson Desmoulains).

Inspired, among other things, by Josephine Baker’s style and by wild animals’ motion sequences, she pursues her very own personal dance language. She gave her style that is influenced by the spirit of jazz and the language of the contemporary modern dance, the name of modern swing. It is with a lot of enthusiasm that she conveys her new interpretation of swing to her students.
